End of an era?

End of an era?

Postby Coach » Wed May 23, 2018 3:14 am

I launched this forum 6 years ago today. In that time, we've had over 16,000 members making nearly 169,000 posts! I can't say that I've read all of those posts, but damned near.

It's been a passion I guess. A bit of a diversion, a hobby of sorts, but mostly, I enjoy helping where I can... and as some of you have experienced, there have been times to dish out a bit of tough love too.

Behind the scenes, I've dealt with a few folks who needed to be shown the door -- that's never fun, uh, well, sometimes it is . I'm constantly keeping spammers and hackers at bay -- that's why a few of you have had trouble logging in overseas. I edit or delete posts that divulge test content or infringe on copyright -- I'm proud to say that I have never been contacted by ncarb or a state board, nor have I received any DMCAs. (preemptive tough love: Right click, "open link in new tab" )

So, what's this end of an era business? Well, this forum isn't going anywhere. It'll probably be online as long as I am. The era that's ending is the vignettes of course. I've noticed that activity here has slowed as we get closer to the 4.0 sunset, but I firmly believe that this forum can still be a valuable resource for candidates. I know some feel that ncarb's google group is the place to go, and I'd agree if I liked disorganization, deletion of sentiments that don't follow the party line, and generally a crappy format. Forums are the way to go.

So, without vignettes, things won't be as fun for me personally, but ARECoach.com will still be here.

I must thank a couple of guys who have been a big help. Sparky83 is everywhere but his presence in PPP & SPD is truly appreciated. If you don't know, I never took the digital vignettes for those divisions so I didn't always feel comfortable commenting on them. He's also been a reliable force for the BS vignette, which was good for me because reviewing them makes my eyes go buggy. The other person is sbyrktct -- He doesn't know this, but I've sort of counted on him to review IL... frankly, IL bores me. ;)

Honestly, I have to thank all who have participated. It's been great fun.

And it's not done!

Best of luck to those who are scrambling in 4.0 and everyone in 5.oh.

It has been an absolute pleasure, Coach.

My site and helpfulness, being very heavily based on 4.0 and the vignettes in particular, will drift into the internet ether... however, I have much respect for you pushing on through to provide help with 5.0... you are a gentleman, a scholar and a badass.

You don't seem like the sentimental type ;) , but I'm sure that I can speak for Lug-nut, skyhook, Mike-SE (RIP), Iron warrior, and the rest of us old heads... we're proud of you. Keep on keepin' on.

Great run so far, Coach. Glad you will keep going as efforts turn toward 5.0.
I have to wonder how many 4.0 candidates passed largely due to this forum? As things ramp up, I'm sure the same will be said about 5.0.

Coach, you mentioned the NCARB forum -- I took all six 5.0 exams last year, starting in about March of '17. At that time, the NCARB forum was essentially the only game in town, and I do feel like I got a lot of help there. That said, I will definitely like to see what this forum will be like with 16,000 more members all cranking on 5.0.

Well played, sir.

Good luck to all of you. I do hope that many of you can complete the exam under 4.0. I took the exam under 3.1 a loooooong time ago. I've been helping folks navigate the exam process ever since. I expect with the retirement of 4.0, I will retire as well. I'm not that far from retirement from the profession as well.

Coach, it's been a pleasure. I especially appreciate your taking up the cause after the original forum collapsed when it was hacked. Many of you may not realize that there is time and expense involved in keeping the forum online in addition to providing advice to exam takers. Kudos to Coach for such a selfless act. We could use a lot more like him in our profession...and in our country as a whole.

Thank you, thank you to Coach for keeping this thing going and helping out so many along the way. I started way back using the areforum to help pass SD, SPD, PPP and then this site for CDS. Appreciate all the effort you and everyone else has put in over the years.

dear coach....
i feel you...
recently, i have been looking at the calendar frequently and thinking how june 30 is approaching. then i think to myself, i wonder how fellow test takers are doing with this date approaching....
i have been so incredibly fortunate to have had the advices insights encouragements from you and sparky and everyone who had helped me from this forum. there is no way on earth that i would have ever passed all 7 exams without all of you, and particularly, you coach!
so many times i literally did not have time to practice the vignettes because i was so behind studying for the MC, and I only reviewed your videos an hour before and exams and you helped me to pass the vignettes. i actually wished that i had known of your vignettes sooner so i would not have struggled so hard with site planning v and also schematic interior v. those were so incredibly hard. i passed both of those vignettes literally on the last click at the last second.

aaahhh... but i too feel this is an end of an era. i also wish that i could have been more helpful to others the way that i had benefited from all the wonderful people here....
in many ways, i still deep down inside feel that i passed all 7 by fluke and that many more people studied much harder than i did and they know the materials much better than i did... i was just lucky to get the questions that i somewhat knew how to answer... up until now, it is still quite unreal that it was possible to pass them all. the exams were so hard mentally... design studios in school were hard but they were enjoyable too. work was very hard but i was working at offices that i loved. this exam was like a life time goal that was sheer torture...
my father had always thought this was so important. i did not get to pass them all before he left to heaven... so to be able to pass them all... at the moment when i found out i passed SS the last exam, it felt.... like finally i live without guilt and with pride. to endure all of this sufferings was largely in part for him more than it was for me in some ways....

and so what i really want to say is, coach, you have impacted so many people and helped so many people in ways in such magnitude that you have probably not envisioned initially and not imagined even now.
i am forever grateful to you and this forum, to everyone who gave me their time to help comment, to answer the questions i had...

thank you, thank you, thank you very very much....

I just want to say thank you to Coach and all the rest who have helped me here with these exams. This place was my main source of reference and finding study material for 6 exams once I discovered it, and quite frankly, I don't think I would have stuck with completing them if it wasn't for the people and stories written here within these pages. It'll be curious to see how this page evolves but google is a mess, I would absolutely (and have!) recommend this website to anyone tackling 5.0. Keep up the great work!

Sad to see this ‘end of a era’ post. This forum played a big part in my ARE and California license.
Any chance of adding a section for architects that have code and business related questions. I still visit the forum from time to time and post questions because I use to get a quick response, but lately the responses have been few and far between  .
All the best coach

I just wandered over here to see what's going on now that the June 30th deadline for 4.0 has passed and scores are posted.

THANK YOU, COACH! And Mike-SE (RIP), mick2, sbyrktct, Sparky83, Lug-nut, skyhook, Ironwarrior...and so many others who posted and answered.

I learned from others' mistakes, and my own as well via those questions and quandaries posted and answered.

Directly impactful, I unequivocally earned my R.A. BECAUSE of this forum's help - Coach - !!! I am grateful.

Best wishes to you and your family, Coach. I will be lurking on the 5.0 Forum but since I am a 4.0 architect, I have to see where I might be able to help in the new format.

Take good care, all, see you on the boards!

Very respectfully,
Verna James, R.A.
