I haven't seen one, and I think the general consensus is to just post your solutions here and solicit help from the community.

the only one i found to give a step-by-step of the vignette is jenny. you said dorf isn't worth it? or just the few tips that are outdated?

Dorf for the most part isn't worth it IMO because it has some outdated tips, though I cover that on the first page of this thread. And yeah, Jenny's got vignette tips in all her guides except CDS, and I guess it's up to you if you think it's useful or not. It's basically her process; that's probably great for some but maybe not great for others.

Hope I am posting this correctly but I found this video and it has always helped me to watch someone attempt the vignette before I start to study for it

Corkscrewed wrote:Not all of his tips are wrong, but his vignettes are for 3.1, so the incandescent light strategy is different. The 4.0 vignette only uses incandescents to light an accept wall; 3.1 uses it to light an entire room.

From what I can gather, the following Dorf tips are not good:
- He recommends using circles to space all lights. DON'T DO THIS. Only use circles for the incandescent accent lighting. Use the grid to space the fluorescents.
- He shows flexible duct that turns. Do not turn flexible duct.
- He makes it seem like small slivers of ceiling grid along the perimeter are really bad. This is not the case, and actually, given that fluorescents are going to probably be 2' to 3' away from walls, slivers may be likely.

Dorf rules that ARE good to follow:
- Keep supply diffuser and return grille 4'-0" minimum from each other
- Keep lights at least 1'-0" away from walls (but really, they should be the distance of the light throw away minimum)
- Connect ducting to center of diffuser
- Ducts can cross over/above lighting
- Place rigid duct in the middle of the 2'-0" wide allowable zone (i.e. 1'-0" off the wall)
- Center fire damper long leg within and parallel to the wall, and point the short leg in the direction of the duct air flow

Hi Corkscrewed,
Some clarification on the Dorf tips:

Read the lighting diagrams the same way and apply the results to the programmed wall(s) only.

Prof. Dorf recommends using his circle method for locating the 2 x 2 fluorescent fixtures only. The grid of sketch circles can be moved from room to room and the 2 x 2 fixtures can be located quickly.

While the need to turn a flexible duct is remote, it's not prohibited by program.

Small slivers of ceiling tiles at the perimeter are often avoidable, but the priority should be accurate lighting levels.

Hope this helps. If you have questions, let us know.
Thanks

Using circles for area lighting is a complete waste of time.

MEEB 'selected sections' HELP

Postby dingicm » Thu Apr 02, 2015 9:41 am

I have also found these youtube videos to be very helpful!

ARE Building Systems by Michael Cheung
85/146 videos

This link will send you to the video I am currently on out of the 146 but should allow you to access the link for all 146 videos without having to search.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d34-VKc ... 4M7vClHKQr

Does anyone have the MEEB Study Guide for which Chapters and Sections to read?

I have one for the 10th Ed but it only lists Chapters and says read 'selected sections', which sections? I'm testing next week and would love some help, I'm using MEEB as a review after Ballast.

Attached is the MEEB recommended chapters list for 8th, 9th and 10th Ed. I can't verify it but it was given to me by a friend that just tested and passed, he received it from other people testing so I'm giving it a try!

Not sure if you're already covered this in the list - but please do include the Amber course in it as it could potentially save people a whole LOT of time in understanding concepts that NCARB is testing us on.

Amber Course or Amber book? I have the book on there, not the course. Not even sure the course was available when I was studying for this last year... is that material, or a seminar? I'm excluding seminars because this is meant to be a set of "printed" resources (excluding the vids).

in that case - its all good. I was referring to the vids - they were really helpful to me esp. since i felt that after over-studying the first two times and failing both the times miserably - the amber course was an invaluable resource. note that i had already passed four exams before - and this was the only one that i could not get a handle on.

The three videos indicated in the Amber Book are on there.

Also, note: be careful when Googling "Amber Course." You either get something about the ARE's, or something about pole dancing.
