Calculating Total U-Value

Calculating Total U-Value

Postby bdaniel_877 » Wed Jan 02, 2019 8:41 pm

Hey all! I just wanted to confirm that I was using this formula right (which is found on the ARE 5.0 handbook) when calculating the total u-value of a wall and when the thickness of the wall is not known.

Uo = (Uw x Aw) +(Uop x Aop) / (Ao)

o= total wall
w= window
op= opaque wall

Yes. That is the equation to calculate the average U-Value of a wall in elevation for example. On the exam they will likely give you the U-Values. Remember to subtract the window areas from the wall area for the Aop value.
