How to frame Canopies on Vignette

Postby jrarchi » Wed Oct 04, 2017 8:49 pm

Coach, can you please help explain the rationale for framing a canopy that is surrounded by the building structure? The NCARB practice vignette solution indicates that it should be framed independently from the main structure, but can be connected to surrounded structure.

When I asked a structural engineer in my office about this, they recommended isolating the structure as much as possible to avoid as little damage to the remaining building in the event the canopy was to tear off the building. The solution this engineer presented was the exact opposite of what NCARB suggests. This has confused me.

I could use a simple rule of thumb right about now. For example: “Always frame a canopy separately and at a min. have beams on two sides of the canopy structure.” Is that statement correct?

Frame it as if it's a room. Don't use bearing walls.
What your engineer said has no bearing on the vignette.
