Vignette Columns in Clerestory and Window Wall

Postby Apeman5oh » Wed Nov 09, 2016 1:34 pm

Hi, just took the exam. Seemed Ok until I got to the notoriously "easy" structures vignette. The program called for "continuous" clerestory "full width" of wall. So, to comply with this, I didn't put columns at 40' intervals. The span was greater than 40'. Checking some blogs it looks like this is a fatal error. This is fun. Anybody got insight on this?

As the program says, columns may be placed in clerestory wall.

Can a column be placed in the clerestory wall even if the clerestory is the entire length of the wall? Would the column interrupt the clerestory then?
Please clarify. Thank you!

Coach, is the scenario outlined by the OP a fatal error, if that one beam is roughly 45' long along the clerestory wall? It's supported at both ends down to the lower level. Thanks.

45' is probably ok but at some point length will matter. There's no reason not to add columns at clerestory wall except at open portals that must remain clear.

Thanks Coach. The other scenario would be the program does not specifically permit columns to be located in clerestory walls, then you have no choice but to run the beam the full length of the wall assuming the joists are running in the shorter direction.
