Logarithmic Formulas are driving me crazy

Postby zukieni » Tue Dec 03, 2013 11:05 am

Logarithmic equations driving me crazy...
logarithmic equations with fractions and exponents calculations
I tried to type inn the equations here but I can't type exponents
If any one has Kaplan see page 148 example 1.

Here's a narrative
Log I = Log 10 exponent -16 + 9 (I can't figure out how the logs got dropped see below)
I = 10 exponent -16 x 10 exponent 9 = 10 exponent -7 watt/cm sq

Please help....! I'm going bankers with these dropping log calculations.

You've got to be kidding me. You are doing Log functions for the ARE? Say that out loud for a minute.....then stop practicing those....then refocus on something truly valuable in your test preparation.

This is never going to be asked of you during your test (or probably your career).

I spent a great amount of hours studying this LOG! I don't think it is necessary. They don't have a log function on NCARB calculator if I remember it correctly.

I too got freaked out by the amount of importance Kaplan puts into this in their Acoustics chapter and spent a couple evenings revisiting log rules. But then I came to my senses and put it in perspective and agree with the other posts.

I started on the Acoustics chapter today, and decided to skip all the formulas, algoritmis questions, and such.... just focusing on the broad concepts; hopefully this is the right approach :)

Take a deep breath.

Repeat after me.

"Kaplan overdoes the calculations."

Breathe again.

Don't worry about mathematically doing logs and just understand the concept of them instead. Remember the rules of thumb.

Go study something else.

I am glad I'm not the only one completely dumbfounded by how terribly kaplan explains how it solves equations. Take a look at this explanation - nowhere does it explain how it reduced the equation to the next step - nor is this operation explained in previous rules. This has happened frequently to me where I have to try to do google searches to figure out the missing math thats not explained. They could have spent literally one sentence explaining the process but they omit it...
