Q: Standpipes

Are standpipes solely for firefighters to connect their hose in? or do they also supply water to the fire sprinkler system?
The study material I'm reading, states only for connecting fire fighting hoses, but then shows a graphic showing a riser diagram it shows the standpipe connected to the fire sprinkler branch lines.
Please help clarify.
