Dead loads, live loads and impact loads

Postby ataribeats » Sat Mar 24, 2018 11:38 am

I came upon a practice question that said that a fixed roof equipment was a live load. I think the answer is incorrect since per code fixed equipment is a dead load.

Also, if a fixed roof equipment vibrates, it is my understanding that its forces are considered impact loads. Therefore, impact loads can be live loads or dead loads, is that correct?

Impact loads are dynamic loads. The IBC describes them as loads that are applied suddenly or change rapidly (like a helicopter landing on a roof). From my understanding fixed mechanical equipment would be treated as a dead load.
