Mike's MIT Truss pdf sample question

Postby pig » Thu Feb 01, 2018 3:25 am

Could someone help to see whether the arrow of Rax is pointing to the correct direction (red circle)? Pls refer to attachment.
it says Rax = -60k, and Rbx= 60k.
The diagram shows the two arrows are pointing towards the same direction.
But, Rax should be a tie-down towards the wall and Rbx should be a push up from the wall, is this correct? So they should be opposite, with Rax pointing towards the wall?

thank you so much!

You are right, and that is why the result for Rax has a negative sign. When the result has a negative sign it means that the direction of the force is the opposite of what was assumed in the formula. In other words the diagram and the math are right.
