On the first floor, your columns need not align with the interior partition walls and they need not be directly opposite one another. This is NCARB land. It would likely be considered more efficient to place a middle column as close as possible to the actual midpoint between two end columns, rather than having two beams of different lengths and depths. Probably a very minor quibble but the point has been made in critiques for others. My $0.02.
