Failed Vignette - Large space question

I failed this exam because of the vignette. The only possible error I can think of were the joists spanning the large open space. The room measured 34’ x 35’, so went with the 34’ direction, which made me nervous to span longer than the 30’ rule of thumb.

Is a beam permitted in the middle of the room? If so, I would have been able to take the joists down to 17’.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

Understandable but probably not why you failed.

Why not?
