Vignette w/ columns - please reveiw

Postby Poedirty » Sat Oct 28, 2017 3:17 pm

Please review - I plan to attempt the NO bearing wall method on my test this Monday. Please let me know your thoughts.

QUESTION: Which level do you like to start modeling from? why?

I like to start on the upper level. That way less columns and easier to keep track of when switching to lower level to line those up.

Thank you Scarlett. Can you please help me understand? The Clerestory is on the North wall of common area...I also have a beam on the lower level east side of common... I am very confused now.

Looks good except that lower beam east of shop 2 shouldn't be there.
Also, you should be aware that unless there's a cross beam or other valid reason, there's no reason why columns need to be at wall intersections. Placing them at midspan is better.

Thank you Coach. So to be clear the circled beam in this image is not needed?

Do you think the red column placements are better?
Do I need the beam at the covered entry(with the "?" mark)?

Thanks for your help. I test tomorrow morning.

Right. It serves no purpose.

Yes.

Absolutely.

Not to highjack the post but I have a question regarding this. If the wall above is not bearing, and there is a wall below in the same plane, why is a beam required? The wall is capable of bearing its own weight and that's all, at least that is my understanding.

* Edit: Essentially the same reason that a beam is not required to the west of the shops.

** Edit Edit: All I can find for an explanation is that NCARB software doesn't understand wall framing and would consider the roof an interruption of the wall, so we need to support that edge of the roof plane. Is that correct?

Thanks.

Correct. But you're actually supporting the wall above the low roof.
