Kaplan practice problem #120

Postby dino08 » Sun Oct 22, 2017 11:45 am

Hi there,

I can't figure out Kaplan's answer description for this problem. The problem states: A two hinged moment-resisting frame resists a lateral seismic load of 60 kips, as shown. Both columns have the same cross-section. what is the moment at the beam intersection?

Their answer description says: In the moment-resisting frame, each column resists one half of the lateral load since the columns are identical....

Why is this? I know they're identical in a concentrated vertical load on a simple beam scenario, but why in this case when the lateral load is closer to one column than the other?

Any points would be greatly appreciated!
