SS Vignette - first attempt

I see most of the people on here have the joists going the opposite way over the covered entry. Based on the dorf video, I thought the shorter distance was always better? I know it adds a beam at the front though.
Also, as a general rule, always have a beam on the lower level where an upper wall meets a lower roof, correct?

*didnt really think i needed to show the upper roof plan, you can see the joists and the columns match up top (i promise)

That's why it's not always better.
