SS Vignette - Feedback Appreciated -- Testing This Thursday

I did centerline to centerline of each column for beam span.

Beams spanned no more than 40'
Joists spanned no more than 30' and are perpendicular to beams and are spaced at 4' O.C.
Deck spanned perpendicular to joists.

sparky,
quick question. would you need a beam on the west side of covered entry @ lower level if its a bearing wall?

No, that would be redundant.

sparky!
why would you need a wall on the west side of covered entry on level one? the joists are spanned north south that wall is not taking any roof load.

...because NCARB doesn't know how to frame a building. In this instance they say that the lower level roof interrupts that 2 story wall, and the program states that roof joists cannot support a wall. Thus the beam or a bearing wall are needed at the lower level.

thanks sparky!
i just came across this in Jenny's notes and was helpful..thought I'd share

· A beam is NOT required on the first floor so long as no joists are carried on it AND it is
an exterior wall. Perimeter walls can support upper levels without a beam
· A beam IS required at all places where an upper wall is supported, even if there isn’t a
partition below.
