Beam + Clerestory Question

Postby morganT » Mon Apr 03, 2017 5:56 pm

Coach, (or anyone) can you clarify one thing...if the clerestory window is in any exterior wall that does not normally require a beam (ie, roof joists parallel to wall in question, and not yellow-grey rule), would the presence of a clerestory require adding a beam below or above it?

Always put a beam under clerestory.

Even if it's a clerestory in name only.

For some more clarification on this question, would not having a beam under the complete length of a wall in which there was a clerestory be considered a critical error? As in, what if 3/4 of the wall had a beam in it, but you forgot to keep running a beam all the way through because you were so focused on the yellow/gray rule. I may* have done said infraction. And this would be assuming that everything else was perfect** (beam and joist lengths, columns lined up, yellow/gray rule, etc.). This is a little confusing to me in part because NCARB doesn't mention this specifically in the NCARB vignette video.

*definitely did
**because who knows what perfect even means on these tests
