Structural Layout Vignette and Multiple Choice

joist spacing

Postby jhesterm » Tue Nov 05, 2013 2:54 pm

Hey,

I just started looking at stuff today and haven't even started studying the written materials yet but I was wondering - since I did a quick practice vignette - since there are a lot of different choices for the joist spacing is there a rule of thumb that I just haven't learned yet? It seems like most people were using 30"-36" spaced joists all around rather than larger spacing for the shorter spans and smaller spacing for the longer spans. Any tips would be appreciated as I begin to dive into this. I'm also currently studying for SD as well, but there is only so much of furniture layout I can take in one day so I figured I would just start doing structures too.

Thanks!

ALWAYS use max allowable deck span for joist spacing.
