Steel Design Method

Postby cdowski » Sun Nov 03, 2013 12:17 pm

The NCARB guide says to use Strength Design Method (Load and Resistance Factor Design LRFD) for the purposes of the exam. The Kaplan guide says page 63, that in this lesson they're focusing on using the ASD method (Allowable Stress Design). I can't figure out in Ballast which one they're using for sure, but it also seems to be ASD. Is this right? Do neither of these guides teach you the method you're tested on? Where do I learn how to use the Strength Design Method (LRFD)?

I would hate to waste my whole weekend studying ASD for steel if it's not actually on the test?

Panie Dowski,

You'll have to understand both. But I would say greater emphasis is ASD.

Know general concepts for LRFD, but memorize the most salient load combinations inherent to LRFD.

Have the latest study materials on hand. Make sure you do all of the Kaplan questions. Take the Thaddeus online videos. Mitalski may be also be helpful.
