ncarb vignette

Postby debbiemac » Sun Oct 13, 2013 8:35 pm

OK, so after looking at several postings, I realize I need some clarification, and a general approach on this vignette which is either deceptively easy to complete in 15 minutes or too tricky.
Can the column/beam solution be used for any problem? Then, why use bearing walls or better to use combination of both? The beam/column solution seems to make this a very quick vignette.
To draw the beam - stop and start at each column so the computer doesn't read it as a too long or continuous beam?
Silly question maybe, but does is matter what order items go on the drawings? For example, if you see you need a column, just put one in the middle of a beam or redraw (seems too tedious) two shorter beams?
I attached a few variations - thinking the one with the beam at the west wall of open area is right? It's OK to connect a beam to beam on a column in this vignette? (So bogged down with real life, I need a vignette reality check). Also wondering if the beam at the top of the tall space needs to be repeated below or is this a fatal redundancy?
(note to self, remove silly grid)
Thank you in advance!

It's pretty damned easy.

Can the column/beam solution be used for any problem?

Yes.

Then, why use bearing walls or better to use combination of both?

There's no reason to use bearing walls. I recommend never using them.

To draw the beam - stop and start at each column so the computer doesn't read it as a too long or continuous beam?

Yes.

Silly question maybe, but does is matter what order items go on the drawings?

No.

For example, if you see you need a column, just put one in the middle of a beam or redraw (seems too tedious) two shorter beams?

Drawing separate beams doesn't take much time.

Upper
Move middle south column to west wall of shop 2.
I would add a column to west side of north portal.

Lower
The bottom one is most correct.
Delete column at northeast of shop 2.
Center northernmost and southernmost columns.
Add column at west side of portal.

Draw everything to centerlines.

in the bottom drawing, do you need the beam connecting the Prep&Store and Shop 1? i.e. across the Covered Entry? why? to give stability to the higher volume?

Are you using the current NCARB Guide? It should have a date of 7/2012 (I think) or newer. That is the first one with the clarification on the beam requirement.
Read my vignette guide for more information.
