upper floor (my understanding is that all walls at the upper level must be supported by a beam below?)

My understanding is that upper level walls that are not adjacent to a lower level space do not need beams at the lower level.
So, the north wall would not need a beam in the lower level structural plan.

Perhaps Coach could confirm this?

i believe he already has on a separate post. i agree with you. no north wall in the lower level plan-- i also don't think the east/west walls are necessary either... its only those walls that intersect the lower roof

Remember to keep joist lengths less than 30'. Your joist spans at the reception exceed 30'.

I wouldn't think twice about using 33' joists.

Well I made this comment because it was stated in the study material but after working this problem, it makes sense to use the joist spanning 33'.

Well I made this comment because it was stated in the study material but after working this problem, it makes sense to use the joist spanning 33'.

Especially since, on this problem, you are forced to span E/W with the joists anyway.
