Alt Vignette - comments please!

Postby ad2011 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 3:24 pm

Here's my solution for the Alternate using the NCARB program.
I located the Clerestory Window on the south wall of the Cafeteria.

A couple of questions:

1. I added a set of columns and beams at the middle of the Waiting Room space. because without this the Joist span would have been 30'-4" (slightly above the forum recommended 30' max). Is this appropriate? I wasn't sure if it was worse to extend the Joist span by 4" or to use more Columns/Beams. I figured the latter would be safer.

2. Is a beam required at the Window Wall on the Lower Level framing plan?

thanks in advance for any thoughts.

No.

BTW, the span is not 30'-4".

what is the span then?

I think I addressed the span issue by changing the beam-joist orientation in the second try. Any issues with this version?

Span is face of bearing to face of bearing.

There's no reason to break up the spans. Turn the joists.
You can go up to 35' without worry.

thanks Coach.

one more question.
If I had kept the orientation from my first pass, would it have been ok to have a Column in the center of the Waiting Room (i.e., not inside a wall)?

no, don't place any columns that aren't in a wall.
