ARE Guide Sample Question - Section Modulus

Postby runningarch » Tue Oct 08, 2013 6:11 pm

I must be missing something here. In the generic ARE Guide that NCARB provides, on question 6, it's asking for the section modulus of the wide flange beam. I don't understand how they get the answer of 57.3 in(cubed). Isn't the section modulus formula S=bd(squared)/6?

Please help me understand this simple concept.

That formula is for a rectangle. You can use it for the overall shape but then you must subtract the S for the voids.

That makes sense. Do I calculate the Section Modulus for the voids the same way (using S=bd(squared)/6?

I was having trouble with the same question: glad I found this post. So it looks like they try to trick you by providing the wrong (to be more accurate, incomplete) formula next to the picture. I also fell for it. Hope this isn't typical...
