I don't think you need the beam north of the preparation room on the first level as it doesn't seem to support any joists.

I don't agree with the above comment from nednarb. It seems like you do need the beam because it is carrying some of the load from the upper floor. This requirement for a beam is clearly indicated in the new NCARB exam guide. Given this I think the vignette solution looks great!

I agree with nednarb. The loads from the upper floors are being carried by the columns, so a joist spanning between the two columns at the north end of the preparation room should be sufficient?

The lower level beam north of prep is required.

Anyone know why ncarb shows the joists over the covered entry spanning the long direction?
