Base Shear

Postby acadia » Sun Sep 15, 2013 12:35 pm

I am looking at the base shear calculation = Cs x W and I'm uncertain about using Cs from Sds or Sdi. One source said to select the most severe, which I interpret to mean the larger number...while another source said to use the smaller of the two. My understanding is that Sdi provides the max design limit and therefore I could use the smallest number ie either the limit or the number below the limit.

Thanks for any clarification

It may be in the guide. I only have the steel and vignette notes downloaded (which are great, thank you!!!). Is it possible to access the notes other than through the forum? Thank you!

Mike,

I looked over your seismic guide. Would you mind letting me know if my understanding is accurate?

Use Cs = Sds/(R/I) UNLESS:

it is greater than Sd1*I/TR - or-
it is less than .044*Sds*I

Is S1 = Sd1?

Thanks,

Thanks,

S1 is a value taken from a map. Sd1 is a calculated value derived from S1
