Section Modulus of I-Beam

Postby jpagliaroli » Wed May 27, 2015 2:02 pm

Can someone explain this to me if it's not too long? Or refer me to somewhere that explains this? Is this where you have to make a table? It is more straight forward for a rectangular section, but not this I-beam. I have checked kaplan, ballast, jenny's notes and mike's guide and I am not seeing/understanding. Not sure why NCARB can't explain how they got their answers. They obviously did the work for it, why not show it?

Finally found the answer with this video if anyone needs to know. Way easier than I thought. He does an example a little after minute 6.

I believe if this kind of question shows up
in the test, they would have a Beam Table
attached.
This is definitely a time trap, unless the beam section
is a solid square (would have served the same testing purpose).

This question is straight out of the ncarb practice manual.

Subtract S of the voids from S of the overall rectangle.

Thanks coach. That's what I found from that you tube video I shared the link to. Much easier than I expected it to be! If you have a minute can you glance over the vignette I posted? I just need a quick blessing before the exam tomorrow.

Thanks,
Jamie
