BL - Circulation Area in Yellow Hatch

Postby fare75 » Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:18 am

Some diagrams for items that are not in NCARB 3.1 or 4.0 BL practice program to help everyone & me

Tips in the BL program:
Warnings
· Wall openings may be drawn only between circulation areas (including corridors). Circulation areas are indicated by a lighter hatched background.
· Be sure that the walls of adjacent circulation areas (including corridors) are opened by doors or wall openings.
· Remember that you cannot move elements from one floor to another

Vestibule
Many discussions here:

I think we all agree on this:

"Open Lounge Area" (one of the terms used in Dorf's book)
not much discussion here:

I created some diagrams based on the NCARB 3.1 BL I just completed. I swapped Children’s Reading Room into a Open Lounge (OL)
Focus on the overall circulation and ignore other programs

If a programmed space is shown in yellow hatch, but you treat it like other rooms

It's a dead-end circulation space! clearly a fatal error! :?

A last minute quick dirty fix:
Use wall opening between the Lobby and the Open Lounge and add an exit door.
no more dead-end

But adding more exits are not ideal in BL...
a better approach would be moving a stair to the end...treat it like an extended area of the Lobby.
Right?

My advice for circulation areas other than vestibules:
- Connect to corridors with wall openings.
- Make sure space is usable as intended, ie, they are not glorified corridors.
- Code prohibits dead end CORRIDORS over 20', not dead end circulation.

But as usual, if you're squeamish, adding an exit is nowhere near as bad as having an illegal dead end.

Thanks Coach! I'll take your advice and create my own alt to practice :D

If there is a dead-end circulation area as large as the lobby (or even larger!), it looks really strange to me even the NCARB code only prohibits dead-end CORRIDORS.
i'd rather play safe
