Overlapping of door clearances

Postby asawari » Fri May 01, 2015 10:27 am

I am taking my test tomorrow and had a question. I know this topic is debatable but would like to know others' opinions on it.

Can the push/ pull clearance of doors overlap?

thanks!

Straight from the program,

"Maneuvering clearances: Minimum maneuvering
clearances at doors shall be as shown in Figure 2. The floor
or ground area within the required clearances shall be
level and clear. No door, when open to 90 degrees, shall
interfere with the maneuvering clearance of another door."

So no.

I think they can overlap, but I guess one door's push/pull clearance shouldn't overlap with another door's swing. Good luck!

I think this only means a door's swing shouldn't interfere with another door's clearance.

Okay so that quote I put above was from the NCARB PDF. When I opened the practice software that last line where it says, " No door, when open to 90 degrees, shall interfere with the maneuvering clearance of another door." isn't there. Still, to be safe I wouldn't allow them to overlap.

The door swing does not occupy the entire door clearance. They are 2 different things.
The clearances are just empty space and can overlap, just like clearances for furniture can overlap the door clearance.

The door swings were inside the room, those were clear. It was the 48x48 squares on the push side that were overlapping.

A door CFA cannot conflict with another door's swing. Otherwise, two door's CFAs can overlap.

Bostoniarch: My question was related to the second of the two diagrams, in which it seems OK if the clearances overlap. Thanks for the clarification!
