Roof Plan - Please review 1st try

Postby samialj » Sat Jul 08, 2017 9:30 am

First attempt at this...for the height of the high roof I used the highest point of the low roof to calculate the lowest point of the high roof (14'-8"+24"(clerestory)+18"(structure)= 18'-2"...I think I did this correctly.

Please review and let me know if I did anything stupid. Thanks!

Technically your solution works, but the high roof is too high and that may be a downgrade, or even fatal. The 3'-6" (24" clerestory + 18" roof construction) height change between the lower and upper roof would take place along the roof edge where the clerestory is located, not at the ridge of the lower roof. The image below shows the elevation of the lower roof along the clerestory wall at 12'-6"... Therefore, 12'-6" + 3'-6" = 16'-0" for low-point of the upper roof. Hope this helps.

Also...don't run your gutter/downspout in front of the chimney. Bad design logic. And make sure you provide separate gutters for the upper and lower roofs along the east side of the building.

Cool, makes sense. Thanks for the helpful criticism and advice!

Looking at the image you posted, there is no flashing on the plan west side of the chimney where the cricket and the chimney meet. Wouldn't you need flashing at that intersection?
