3.1 Ramp 2nd Attempt

Postby Concord55 » Tue Mar 20, 2018 2:46 pm

This is a second attempt at the 3.1 Ramp. I tried to make sure I would have a 60" turning radius on the double landings since I have a handrail separating the landing from the ground floor level below.

I was a bit confused about the width of the stair. If my 24" landing is 5'0" wide, do my stairs also have to be 5'0" in order not to reduce the width in the direction of egress travel? Since the landing only needs to be 44" (except where it changes direction) can I also make the stairs 44". It's only that once I make my ramp 5'0" (or stairs 5'0") everything after that has to stay at that same width of 5'0". Correct?

Thank you!

No.

Landing size has no bearing on stair width.

At a minimum, yes.

5" landing requires guardrail.

Thank you, Coach!

I have a question about the 5” landing because I thought the code said anything 6” or below does not require a guardrail. Is that only for the ramp and not the landing?

Thank you.

You always need guardrails on landings and ramps.

Coach: just to confirm — in this particular case of 5” landing and the guardrail requirement — wouldn’t the guardrail be required only until the second riser of the stair? Other sides don’t require a guardrail since other adjacent surfaces are higher than 5”?
