The purposes of fire-resistance requirements in the building code include which of the following? check all that apply.
A. To permit safe evacuation of the occupants
B. To prevent fire damage to the building
C. To reduce the generation of toxic smoke
D. To prevent structural failure for a specified period of time

The answer is A and D. It says Fire resistance requirements relate primarily to life safety, and only secondarily to structural damage.

I thought the answer is ALL. I still don't understand why B and C are not included. Both also affect a person life safety. Fire damage to building is the same as D structural failure; toxic smoke affect breathing.

Can someone tell me why? Thanks in advance.

What is the date of your book? The answers are correct, but should also include delaying damage to adjacent structures. A&C refer to Heath, Safety and Welfare, which is the purpose of building codes.

Fire resistance does not prevent fire damage.

C. To reduce the generation of toxic smoke

Fire resistance has nothing to do with smoke generation.
