ANSI

Postby mrclx » Wed Aug 30, 2017 7:29 pm

Hello,

I am looking at a Kaplan 2009 exam answer, that says that State or Federal projects can't disregard ANSI handicapped standards.
Is this correct? I haven't seen before that ANSI regulates handicapped standards.

Thank you for the help,

Only if codified by the AHJ. ANSI has no authority on its own.

ADA is a federal "Act" that really only has jurisdiction when someone files a lawsuit claiming discrimination.
The ADA guidelines provide the formwork for demonstrating how buildings should be made accessible.

ANSI A117.1 is a standard for accessibility that can be adopted (or codified, as Coach said) into federal, state, county, local building codes.
(You'll find few differences between the ADA guidelines and the ANSI A117.1 standard.)
In and of itself, ANSI has no jurisdiction... it just provides standards for someone else to enforce.

Used to work for the Air Force. Can confirm that we would not follow ADA in our designs if there would be no one other than military in the buildings (i.e., likely only able-bodied persons). We would often apply the standards to the greatest extent, but didn't follow them hardcore. Which is why I am having a difficult time with the standards studying for the tests...
