calculating average R-value of a roof

Assuming a typical symmetrical gable roof, if you had a material at the eaves and a different thickness of the material at a ridge, how do you calculate the average R-value if you are not given a width that this material spans? Do you assume the insulation meats in the middle of each side of the gable?

Have you found any material that covers this? Extremely confusing, feels like there's not enough info to answer.
