Depth of Open Web Steel Joists

Depth of Open Web Steel Joists

Postby Magic Loogies » Tue May 30, 2017 9:33 pm

I ran across this in a practice problem from some 4.0 practice exams, and upon trying to find the correct answer have found a lot of variety. What is the CORRECT answer? (Correct, of course, being whatever NCARB tells us is correct.) Thanks in advance for the help!

From my ppi2pass PPD study guide:
DLH 52-96 in

From my ppi2pass PDD study guide:
DLH 52-72 in

From my 4.0 practice exam:
DLH 52-72 in

From Wikipedia:
DLH 52-120 in

From an actual steel joist manufacturer
DLH 120 in

You do realize there are three series of Open Web Steel Joists right?
K Series, LH and DLH (Standard, Long Span and Deep Long Span).
And they all vary in depth.

All the answers you listed are correct depending on which one in particular you are referring to.

The questions you stated is very vague.
It's like saying "How deep is a Beam". A beam can be 6" Deep..., heck it can be 24" deep.....

Don't get caught up on minutia.

Sorry to not be more clear.

The practice problem is specifically: in the open web steel joist system, the deep long span joists of the DLH series have depths up to
A. 30 in
B. 4.0 ft
C. 6.0 ft
D. 10.0 ft

One of the answers is in the study guide, however my real world experience has shown this to not be true. I realize it is minutia, but on the off chance something like this comes up, I would like to know the right answer.

...I'm curious, which parts of these exams are not dealing with minutia? :)

The answer is 6.0 ft.
I remember this from Ballast Study guide....and i just remember the deepest beams were as tall as me. :)

And on the minutia topic, I would worry more about the big concepts. And if you do get a minutia question, just make an educated guess.

From all the exams I've taken, the most minutia questions I got were about accessibility requirements. That's when they can get a bit more technical.

Ok thanks. I am looking at Ballast as well, but they have a different number noted in the 5.0 PPD study material - which threw me for a loop.

I was just teasing about the minutia comment.
