plan checker review accessibility / ADA

Postby YRM » Mon Dec 03, 2018 12:39 am

In the Whole Enchilladas [TWE] author insist that the plan checker does not review ADA,
but from DSA website, here is an extract that clearly says that CBC chapter 11B meets or exceed ADA
"the legislative intent of CA Government Code ยง4450(d) indicates the Division of the State Architect (DSA) seek certification by the USDOJ that the CBC accessibility requirements meet or exceed the requirements of the 2010 ADA Standards"
could someone help entangle that to me?

Hey YRM,

It sounds like a terminology discrepancy to me? ADA Standards for Accessible Design is not code but a standard of design, and plan checkers check the docs meet code not design standards. Plan checkers not looking for ADA, but in California, looking for CBC chapter 11 compliance, as CBC has adopted ADA Standards (or greater per DSA note).

I've practiced in CA for nearly 20 years and am hoping to be eligible to take the Supplemental next year. Best of luck to you!

Cheers,
Raj
