standpipe

Can someone help explain to me what's different between standpipe and sprinkler systems.
(I didn't know how I passed ME with this question still dangling in my head). Anyway, I thought
sprinkler always goes w/ standpipe. Is there a condition where they use them independently ?

It is my understanding that a standpipe is simply a vertical pipe. That vertical pipe can be used in fire sprinkler systems (both wet and dry). Standpipes are also used in potable water supply throughout a building. For example, a standpipe is used to bring water down from a tank on a roof. Or used to bring or pump water up from the street. If that is the case someone would need to calculate the static head to make sure we have enough pressure to run the plumbing fixtures. Or not too much pressure if the tank is on the roof.
