distinguishing between UL, ASTM, FM, etc?

distinguishing between UL, ASTM, FM, etc?

ANSI is unique because it does not certify products or test them.
GA seems partial to gypsum

UL, ASTM, FM, WH seem to have a lot of cross-over. Any ideas how we might best be able to distinguish the difference between them for testing purposes?

UL tests assemblies
ASTM tests materials
FM assures compliance with insurance standards.

And for the CSE, FM is Factory Mutual, which is not to be confused with SFM, State Fire Marshal. SFM has their own Building Materials Listing Program.

UL-performs tests based on standards of other organizations
ANSI- only approves standards developed by other organizations & works to avoid duplicate standards (coordinate construction standards)
ASTM- publish standards and test procedures, DON'T ACTUALLY PERFORM TESTS, rate assemblies (develop construction standards)
WH- label products ...but I'm not entirely sure how exactly this is done
FM- certify products to mainly ensure property insurance company that these certified products will perform in such a way to prevent property loss in case of a fire, etc
GA- trade association for gypsum, so develop their own product
ASHRAE- another trade association, so develop and write standards for HVAC products
NFRA- trade organization, develop and write standards for fire, electrical and related hazards

and an fyi: the national technology transfer and advancement act required government agencies to use privately developed standards whenever possible, so governments regulators give voluntary standards the force of law by citing them in law/regulations/codes
