inspections vs. special inspections

inspections vs. special inspections

Postby charlamagne » Sat Jan 31, 2015 4:23 pm

A201 states that the contractor will pay and secure for inspections. However, one of my flashcards says that the owner pays for special inspections. Is there a difference between inspections and special inspections? A201 does not state anything about special inspections.

I think the term "Special Inspection" is confusing.

a) If it's used in A201 context, it meant inspection arises out
from the CT, and any required extra inspection on top of that.
b) If it's used in CBC context and clearly referred to Ch17, then
it is the Scheduled Special Inspection.

Surely there is a coincident in terminology between CBC and 201.
(((CBC should call it "critical inspection", sounds better, ha)))

In (a), Owner pays for inspections if Work complied, and
GC pays if not complied.
In (b), GC pays for inspections (bec it has been priced). Now if Extra
inspection is required on top of that (falls back to (a)), Owner has
to pay (if Work is complied) or GC pays if such Extra inspection
reveals non-compliance.

Anyone ?

There is no confusion. There are no ifs.
"Special Inspections" is a codified term.
Read 1704 again.

An underlying principle here is that state/federal laws supersede contracts.

Hello Coach, I have read again CBC-17. Seems to me:
a) The items listed as required for special inspection are
most likely be seen in every project. Yet the price quotes
for those inspections always come from 3rd party (inspectors),
and cities (even big city like SF) will not have it available
when we submit CD and Schedule for Special Inspections.
Hence GC will not have it included in the bid price (unless they
have to estimate it base on their experience. And I think they
have to do so, to cover the cost later, since 13.5.1 said:

b) The twist here is Owner has to pay for extra inspections
arisen out of those inspections (special or not), as explained
here for 13.5.2, given the Work is complied.
201-056.jpg

201-054.jpg

c) Pls correct the above if I am wrong.

Wrong!

State law requires the owner to hire special inspectors directly. If you have any doubt, go to any city's website and look at their special inspection form.

I don't deserve to pass CSE...Just decided to push back test date
for lots of more time after this misunderstanding of such important
principle.

You need to get your head out of minutia and infinite what-ifs and focus on the big picture.
