What books did you use to pass the "CDS"

Postby architectco » Fri Mar 31, 2017 2:23 am

Hi,

I am going to take the "CDS" "V4" in a couple of months and I am not sure what books to study with. What books and material did you use to pass?

Does anyone have an opinion about" Kaplan" vs."ARE Review Manual". ?

Thank you,

Is this your first exam?

I would not only focus on 1 study source. For CDS i used both Kaplan AND Ballast. Also listened to the Schiff Hardin Lectures for the contracts and did Archiflash Practice the vignette and post for feedback.

For the AHPP, I have an old 1996 version. Should I purchase a newer one or will the old be okay for studying?

I need to know my AIA Docs better. I made a list of the AIA Docs with links. Would these be acceptable?

drfmpower, none of your links work. Why aren't you using the ones that NCARB gives you as sample documents?

Log into your NCARB record. On the right side under "Quick Links" there's a link called "AIA Contract Documents Examination Resources". You go through a screen that basically says yes I am testing, and no I won't use these illegally. Then you can access all the contracts you need.

when i took CDS the first time I foolishly only used Caroline's notes and failed. The second time, I studied Caroline's notes, Ballast ARE Review manual and ARE Sample Problems. The doc's are important (B101, A101, A201). If i had it to do over again, I would have listened to Schiff Hardin audio files which are free and he goes over B101 in great detail. The B101 he breaks up into (2) 3 hour audio files. If nothing else, listen to just that part of Schiff Hardin and it takes some of the monotony out of reading B101.

I used:

Ballast ARE Review Manual (read CDS chapters and took detailed notes on the first go around - then skimmed notes for review)
Ballast Practice ARE Sample Problems (did these over and over and drilled in the wrong answers until I understood why I got them wrong)
Kaplan - Brightwood Q&A (did the same as above)
Carolines notes (just skimmed)
AIA Docs (just downloaded what NCARB offers for download and skimmed)
Carolines Notes (skimmed)

NCARB recommends the Project Resource Manual / CSI Manual of Practice... is yet another $200 book (if you're lucky enough to find it used). Has anyone used it? Thoughts on its necessity?

There is a monograph/quiz thing NCARB puts out about Professional Conduct - look for it in your NCARB account. I completed the Monograph and Quiz in an effort to finish the last few hours of my IDP, but the info in it was very helpful for CDS. Also helpful if you still need some IDP/AXP hours. It's pretty long, but as long as you read it, and understand the big ideas, you should be fine for the quiz for IDP. It covers some of the main ethics ideas presented in parts of AHPP.

For this particular exam I only read Kaplan material, the contracts, and the commentary for the contracts. I personally didn't find it beneficial for me to study Ballast for this particular exam. This may not work for you though. I also studied with Designer Hack questions, and studied the sample test questions from both Ballast and Kaplan.
