I don't have the software to actually do this alternate, but I want to make sure I understand that joist/duct combo principal so I marked up this image i found on another thread.

i have divided up the bays according to joist size to isolate the areas where i was looking for combos. the duct dims in green are the largest for that bay and contribute to the largest combination overall for that floor.

can anyone confirm?

Confirmed. Good read on following the line of duct work to find the maximum depth.
