PLEASE CLARIFY - Vignette question

I understand that we are to consider the largest duct on a given floor.
Could NCARB ever have a plan on the exam where joists vary in size in different rooms?
For example:
In the room through which we are cutting the joist is 24 " deep and the duct is 12" but the room below it has a joist at 36" depth and the largest duct is 20" in the mechanical room. Are we to accommodate for 44" or are we do accommodate for 56"?

56" since if it is on the same floor. A floor level is straight across and there must be room for the largest duct and joist.
