contradictionary advice

Postby remy » Mon Nov 04, 2013 6:57 pm

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I am currently reviewing Ballast's Ch. 54 and am confused. Why does Ballas say to draw the footing so that their tops are at the frost line and others say to place the bottoms at the frost line? Shouldn't the entire footing be below the frost line to prevent freeze/thaw damage? Sorry if this has been asked before.

Top of footing should be at the frost line. Period!

It doesn't matter. Top, bottom, or middle. Do what makes you happy.

... so long as it isn't above the frost line.

Coach is right: the minimum requirement is to place the bottom of the footing at the frost line, but people have passed by placing the bottom or top of the footing (or anything in between) at the frost line.

I had the same question. I found the same discrepancy between Ballast and Dorff's Solutions book. Ballast says top, Dorff says bottom. Construction Manager/Contractor I am working with says top. I am skeptical that you'd want the bottom at the frost line because that would cause the structure to heave, wouldn't it?
